California's AB 2017 is a long-overdue correction that finally gives Muslim students and workers the same dignity every other faith community already enjoys. For too long, over a million Muslim Californians have been forced to choose between their faith and their jobs or grades — that's a double standard no one should accept. Recognizing Eid follows the same logic as recognizing Lunar New Year and Diwali, and it's just basic fairness.
AB 2017 is selective favoritism that sidelines the 55% of Californians who identify as Christian while elevating holidays for a group representing just 1% of the state's population. Jews and Buddhists each make up 2% of California and have no official state holidays, so the consistency argument collapses completely. Handing one minority faith official state recognition while scrubbing Christmas and Easter from school calendars is government picking religious winners and losers.
