The Facts

  • A collision between a bus and a freight train at the entrance to the Channel Tunnel on the French side left 19 people injured Thursday evening, French authorities said. The crash occurred at the Eurotunnel site in Pas-de-Calais, northern France.
  • The Pas-de-Calais prefect said an initial report indicated 19 people were involved, including the driver, with no deaths recorded and no lives in danger. Significant resources were mobilized by Eurotunnel before the prefect took charge of the response.
  • Reports said the minibus was carrying heavy goods vehicle drivers preparing to board a Le Shuttle train when it flipped onto the tracks and struck a stationary freight train at the Coquelles loading dock at around 8 p.m.

The Spin

Emergency planning at the tunnel terminal came through in a platform crash that never turned deadly. Heavy resources under prefect authority kept mortal danger from ever taking hold. Leadership already on site and a fast public briefing make confidence in the response the only sensible take.

A minibus that careened out of control into a freight train with nowhere to go exposes a safety failure of the worst kind. Critical injuries along with canceled Eurostar service and freight snarled in both directions prove danger never got contained. A derailment suspected as sabotage and a deadly rail-crossing crash sink any claim of control.
