Version 7.17.1
Burhan is right to reject a truce imposed from abroad that could freeze the RSF in territory it currently controls and risk entrenching Sudan’s division. Peace terms written without Sudan have repeatedly failed, while denying its de facto leader a U.N. platform and treating the army and the force accused of atrocities in El Fasher as equals only deepens the imbalance of power. Real pressure should instead target foreign sponsors supplying and arming the RSF.
Burhan’s latest rejection of an externally backed truce shows why rewarding a general who answers peace efforts with more fighting risks only further bloodshed and mass displacement. Withholding his visa was leverage, not a personal insult. A leader who seized power by coup and rejects even a short humanitarian pause cannot credibly claim to speak for a country being devastated by a war he continues to pursue at enormous human cost.
