Should Eva be remembered for her resilience or should her death prompt further accountability?

The Facts

  • Eva Geller, 90, who was shot during the Bondi Beach attack last December, died Thursday night at a hospital in Sydney's eastern suburbs, nearly a year after the attack that left 15 people killed. Police said they are awaiting further advice and working with the coroner's office.
  • Geller was repeatedly hospitalized for her injuries and was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital weeks ago with an infection linked to her wounds, suffering a stroke while being treated, her family said. Her funeral is scheduled for Monday.
  • Rabbi Aron Moss of Bondi's Nefesh Synagogue said Geller escaped the Holocaust as a child and that doctors told her after the shooting she would never walk again, but "through sheer determination, she got back up and she did walk again."

The Spin

Narrative A

A life defined by surviving the Holocaust in Hungary and rebuilding in Australia deserves to be remembered for far more than how it ended. Eva Geller's lasting legacy is grit, warmth and the quiet courage it takes to rebuild from ashes and keep showing up for family and community. Remembrance like that outlasts any act of hatred.

Narrative B

Justice has to follow the harm wherever it leads, even when a death comes nearly a year after the Bondi Beach attack. Police are working with the coroner to determine whether Eva's death can be linked to her injuries, potentially opening the door to a 16th murder charge against Naveed Akram. Anything less risks leaving the full cost unrecorded.
