The road blockades have strangled Bolivia for 50 days, causing a full-blown economic and humanitarian disaster. Calling it a mere protest is an understatement; this is economic sabotage. Once the government restores order in the country, the authorities must bring to justice those who funded and incited these blockades.
Declaring a state of emergency to clear blockades sets a dangerous precedent. El Salvador and Ecuador went down this same road and ended up as full autocracies. Bolivia's declaration, the first since the 2019 coup, is far more about consolidating power than protecting citizens. Democracy in Latin America keeps dying under the banner of security.
