Version 7.7.3
The operator's reckless actions caused the tragic incident near Liberty Island on Saturday. To make matters worse, the boat was likely an illegal charter. His choice to run an unlicensed, unregulated operation taking paying passengers onto open water was a disaster waiting to happen.
Boating deaths are entirely preventable, and mandatory operator education is the fix that keeps getting ignored. Between 2018 and 2023, nearly 4,000 people died in boating accidents nationwide, and 75% of fatal crashes in 2023 involved operators with zero safety training. The U.S. needs legislation to push the Coast Guard to study and establish real federal training standards before more passengers pay the price.
