Australia's H5N1 response is among the most prepared in the world, with over AU$113 million invested before the first mass mortality event even hit. The government also detected local spread early, giving industry and wildlife managers a head start that most countries never got. With AU$24 million in fresh funding unlocked, Australia is as ready as any nation can be.

Government-critical narrative

Strong preparation is not the same as being truly ready for what's coming. H5N1 is now spreading among resident wildlife, and no amount of coordination will stop birds from flying across beaches, wetlands and inland waterways. Without urgent mammal surveillance and a serious look at vaccination for vulnerable marine species, this risks becoming an unmanaged catastrophe.
