Amazon's AGI layoffs aren't a retreat from AI — they're a strategic pivot toward where the real money is: getting AI to actually work inside businesses. The $1 billion AWS Forward Deployed Engineering push embeds engineers directly with customers to build agentic systems fast, compressing deployments from months to days. Frontier model research is fine, but the company that wins enterprise AI is the one that shows up and gets the workflow running.

Amazon is laying off the very people building AGI while spending billions to develop AI that will eventually replace human workers — and calling it "sharpening focus" doesn't make that less contradictory. This is at least the fourth or fifth round of cuts since a 16,000-person layoff, and the AGI group has already lost its top two leaders. A company this committed to AI's future shouldn't be hollowing out the team responsible for building it.
