Five teenage boys were killed and four people were seriously injured after a car drove in the wrong direction on the M9 motorway in Co Kildare, Ireland, colliding head-on with a second vehicle at around 3 a.m. on Sunday.

The car involved was a BMW that had failed to stop for the police before entering the motorway southbound on the northbound carriageway. Gardaí were instructed not to engage with the vehicle, the Garda Representative Association said.

The police are probing whether the deceased had links to the Lucky Dip gang, a network of young joyriders identified last year, which is believed to have around 60 members and has been connected to some 300 incidents in early 2026.

The four occupants of the second car were en route to Dublin Airport. Two women in their 30s remain in critical condition at Tallaght University Hospital, while a woman in her 20s and a seven-year-old child are in serious condition.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly called the crash "horrific" and said that "in some cases" vehicles are being driven on the wrong side of motorways for social media likes. The incident was referred to the Office of the Police Ombudsman.

The M9 crash follows a similar incident the previous weekend in which nine people were injured when a car drove in the wrong direction on the M50 in Dublin. The Police Ombudsman Fiosrú is also investigating that incident.
