At least 21 people have been killed after a fire broke out at the Flourish Stay B&B hotel in New Delhi's Malviya Nagar on Wednesday. More than 40 people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Of the 21 killed, 17 were foreign nationals from countries including Liberia, Nigeria, Mozambique and Bangladesh. Many had traveled to New Delhi for medical treatment and were staying near the Max Super Speciality Hospital.

Delhi Police have filed an FIR under culpable homicide provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the hotel owner, Lovkesh Bajaj, was reported to have absconded. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi also ordered an investigation into the incident.

The building had no fire NOC, illegal basement rooms, a single exit and zero ventilation, yet authorities let it operate at four times its licensed capacity. With eyewitnesses suggesting there were signs of fire up to an hour before emergency vehicles arrived, the whole region should be focused on improving services for the sake of future safety.
