4 Remaining Italian Divers Found Dead in Maldives Cave

The Facts

The bodies of four remaining Italian scuba divers were located Monday inside the Thinwana Kandu cave system in Vaavu Atoll, Maldives, four days after the group vanished. The four were found in the innermost third segment of the cave, described as its largest section. The body of diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti, 44, had been recovered separately on Friday near the cave entrance.

The recovery operation was led by three Finnish cave-diving specialists deployed by Divers Alert Network (DAN) Europe, who used closed-circuit rebreather systems allowing for longer, deeper dives. Officials said further dives would be needed over subsequent days to bring the bodies to the surface.

A yellow weather alert was in effect that morning warning of rough seas and strong winds, pointing to conditions beyond any diver's control. These were serious researchers on a scientific mission, and reducing their deaths to rule-breaking erases the full picture.
