A passenger ferry carrying 267 people capsized off the Northern Cyprus coast of Kyrenia on Sunday while en route to the Turkish port of Tasucu, killing at least eight people and leaving 18 missing.

The vessel began taking on water shortly after departure. A distress call was issued shortly afterward as the catamaran-style ferry began sinking off Diana Beach.

Survivors reported the ferry moving erratically before its bow broke on impact with the water, allowing water to rush in. One survivor, Efe Multici, told CNN Turk the vessel leaped "high into the air, then came crashing down" before "the front left side burst open."

A total of 241 people were rescued and brought ashore, while the ship sank to a depth of 514 meters. Turkish divers were deployed to assist in searches at the seabed, and dozens of survivors were taken to hospitals in Kyrenia and northern Nicosia.

Turkey led the search-and-rescue operation, deploying five coast guard vessels, two helicopters and six naval units to the scene. Cyprus's joint rescue coordination centre (JRCC) reported offering assistance through the U.N. peacekeeping force, but the Turkish Cypriot authorities reportedly declined, saying they did not need it.

Refusing legitimate rescue assets during a maritime disaster is a consequence of illegal occupation that now has a body count. The international community must stop treating Turkey's administration in occupied Cyprus like a normal government.

The real lesson from the Kyrenia ferry disaster is that Mediterranean ferry safety standards are dangerously inadequate. A vessel that departed despite bad weather conditions — conditions serious enough to delay the voyage in the first place — should never have left port with hundreds of passengers aboard. Stricter rules protecting tourists from being treated like cargo are long overdue.
