The Spin

Narrative A

Yemen's unity remains the only viable path forward despite separatist threats even from parties within the country's legitimate government. It's unacceptable that the Southern Transitional Council continues to insist on a secession, to treat southern Yemen as a state, and to impose a secessionist fait accompli that would be disastrous for all Yemenis.

Narrative B

A two-state solution offers Yemen's only realistic path to peace as Houthis cement separate statehood in the north through financial secession and reject any compromise. The Southern Transitional Council has viable governance capabilities, and international recognition of southern autonomy could be crucial to stabilizing the country.
