Venice Residents Protest Bezos Wedding
The Facts
- Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez plan to marry in Venice later this month, with approximately 200 guests expected to attend the celebration over three days between June 24-28, an event which has drawn protests from local groups.
- Venetian protesters organized under "No Space for Bezos" have vowed to disrupt the wedding by blocking canals with boats and bodies, jumping into waterways, and creating street blockades. The group hung banners on St. Mark's bell tower and Rialto Bridge with Bezos' name crossed out.
- Protesters argue the wedding symbolizes Venice's transformation into a playground for billionaires while residents face housing shortages and rising costs. They cite overtourism concerns in a city receiving 20-30 million visitors annually with only 50,000 permanent residents.
The Spin
Narrative A
This wedding represents everything wrong with Venice today, with billionaires treating the city like their personal playground while locals can't afford housing. Bezos built his fortune exploiting workers and now wants to militarize the entire historic center for his vanity project. The city needs affordable homes and decent jobs, not oligarchs parading around in superyachts.
Narrative B
Venice has always welcomed the world's elite and this wedding brings prestige, jobs, and economic benefits to local vendors and workers. The city regularly hosts major international events without problems and protesters represent a vocal minority, not the majority of citizens who are proud Venice was chosen. Quality tourism like this is exactly what Venice needs, not mass day-trippers.
