The Facts

  • Ukrainian analysts from the DeepState project, a frontline mapping service that relies on accounts of military insiders from the country, on Wednesday described the situation in Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region as "on the verge of critical and continues to worsen to the point where it may be too late to fix."
  • Russian forces have had their sights on the town, with a pre-war population of roughly 60,000, since 2024, and Ukraine's military have since routinely described the surrounding region as the place of most intense fighting anywhere on the battlefield.
  • After months of incremental Russian gains, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that satellite imagery showed the presence of 200 Russian fighters inside the town while adding that in nearby regions, its forces outnumber those of Ukraine by a ratio of eight-to-one, further describing the situation as "difficult."

The Spin

Narrative A

Russia is making a concerted push around Pokrovsk and sending a huge amount of troops there. This is an attempt to fool the U.S. into thinking that Moscow is making vast gains so that Washington will back its desire for Ukraine to cede further territory during negotiations. However, they are not succeeding and Ukraine is holding its defenses.

Narrative B

Ukraine has been in this situation before but rather than concede that a city is about to fall, it digs in to avoid political embarassment, ultimately resulting in a rushed withdrawal that leads to more casualties. It would be more prudent if it started pulling its forces out sooner to save lives and equipment.
