UK Sanctions 25 Targets Involved in Alleged People Smuggling

The U.K. sanctioned 25 individuals and entities on Wednesday under its new Global Irregular Migration Sanctions Regime, the world's first dedicated sanctions system targeting people smuggling and organized immigration crime.

The sanctions freeze U.K. assets, impose travel bans, and prohibit U.K. businesses from dealing with designated individuals, targeting activities from supplying boats to sourcing fake passports and operating hawala money transfer systems.

Those sanctioned include Albanian gang leader Bledar Lala, who allegedly controls Belgium operations smuggling migrants across the Channel, former Serbian police translator Alen Basil, who reportedly leads a trafficking network, and Chinese company Weihai Yamar Outdoors Product Co.

Further sanctioned individuals include Mohammed Tetwani, who has allegedly overseen a migrant camp in Serbia and led a migrant-smuggling operation; and Muhammed Khadir Pirot, reportedly a hawala banker involved in informal smuggling payment systems.

As of July 16, more than 22,500 people have crossed the Channel in small boats in 2025 so far, an increase from approximately 14,761 during the same period in 2024 and the highest level to date.
