The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Nearly 1,300 dedicated men and women work at the Clairton Plant each day, performing their work with the utmost attention to safety. That's why Monday's explosion was so unexpected. While U.S. Steel will investigate and will assist official inquiries, in the meantime, it would like to offer its thoughts and prayers to all who have been affected by this tragic incident.

Establishment-critical narrative

Even by official accounts, U.S. Steel has a terrible record of looking after its workers and its wider community. Due to its unsafe working practices, it has previously been fined and penalized on a number of occasions by both state and federal regulators. It's also been forced to pay out in a number of legal cases. This incident must be publicly scrutinized for maximum transparency.
