The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

There is a tremendous level of dislike between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders. But ultimately, Trump will keep direccting them to meet and settle their differences in order to resolve the conflict. There will be big consequences if the planned meeting doesn't take place as agreed.

Pro-Russia narrative

Russia is not opposed to a leaders' meeting but this ought to be prepared at lower levels so that it is constructive and brings a meaningful conclusion to the conflict. Ukraine has not responded to the Russian proposal, offered in the last round of negotiations in Turkey, to break off into smaller working groups on political, military and humanitarian issues so that issues can be better specified and tackled.

Pro-Ukraine narrative

Ukraine remains ready to engage with Russia at the leader-level, and is thankful to the U.S. for trying to make this happen. What's left is for Moscow to show the same readiness. If it continues to refuse, the U.S. needs to consider additional sanctions and tariffs. Nothing should be off the table to compel Russia to engage in real negotiations.
