Trump's recent change of rhetoric towards Russia is derived from new intelligence that reveals Russia's economy is on the brink of collapse, meaning the same fate is sealed for the Russian war effort. With this in mind, Trump is heaping the pressure on Moscow in a strategic effort to bring it to the negotiating table, although it has so far spurned his previous efforts.
Anti-Trump narrative
Trump's pivot on Moscow can be interpreted in many ways. But rather than signaling a coherent change of policy towards Russia, what it really shows is that the president is completely unpredictable in what he'll say or do. He's just as likely to take the complete opposite stance in a few weeks' time. These mixed signals are not helping to bring the war to a close.
