The Spin

Republican narrative

Coming on the heels of the Biden administration allowing a record number of illegal immigrants to enter the United States, the Trump administration has been left with no choice but to reassess TPS and remove it where possible. Conditions in Venezuela have improved enough that TPS is no longer justified, and maintaining it would make Americans less safe while encouraging more illegal entries.

Democratic narrative

Ending TPS for Venezuelans ignores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in their homeland, where 82% of people live in poverty and the State Department has warned Americans not to travel due to risks of wrongful detention and torture. This mass de-legalization effort will push hundreds of thousands of vetted, taxpaying workers out of the workforce, harming the American economy while forcing people back to dangerous conditions.
