The Facts

A freight train operated by Canadian Pacific Kansas City de Mexico collided on Monday with a double-decker passenger bus, operated by the Herradura de Plata company, in the industrial Atlacomulco municipality, approximately 80 miles northwest of Mexico City.

Surveillance footage showed the bus, which had only traveled nine miles at that point, moving slowly through heavy traffic across railroad tracks when the fast-moving freight train struck the vehicle's passenger side, tearing the bus apart and dragging it down the tracks.

This tragedy is the result of multiple human errors, including the bus driver's likely failure to follow the rules of the road, as well as a lack of road signage. While it's good to hear the bus company will take care of the victims, this massive loss of life should've never occurred.

Despite earnest attempts to mitigate these tragedies, such as speed cameras and its constitutional "Right to Mobility" initiative, the government must implement these policies everywhere, otherwise things will only get worse.
