The Facts

  • Military commanders from Cambodia and Thailand agreed on a seven-point plan to de-escalate tensions along their shared border as they held several regional meetings on Tuesday.
  • Discussions were brief, leading to an understanding on key measures such as the immediate cessation of hostilities in accordance with the established ceasefire and the establishment of a resolution mechanism involving four representatives from each side.
  • Other points agreed on include the prohibition of troop movement, redeployment or reinforcement, the prohibition of firing at civilians and the facilitation of repatriation of injured and deceased personnel. Another meeting is scheduled for next Monday.

The Spin

Narrative A

Thailand wants peace and is ready to strictly comply with the ceasefire as long as Cambodia does the same. Given that deliberate violations of the terms of the truce are unacceptable and will result in retaliatory measures under the country's legitimate right to self-defense, it's up to Cambodia to no longer breach its agreements and protect peace.

Narrative B

Thailand has levied baseless and malicious accusations against Cambodia at a moment when the country should act with sincerity. Contrary to Thai fictitious claims, Cambodia has strictly abided by the terms of the ceasefire and remains committed to finding a peaceful solution.
