The Spin

Narrative A

This was an open-and-shut case, during which prosecutors meticulously documented 17 trips to scope out Trump's golf course and presented DNA evidence on the rifle and a written confession. The defendant's actions — hiding in bushes for hours with a loaded weapon — speak louder than his desperate courtroom theatrics.

Narrative B

While there's no excuse for violence, Routh displayed behaviors pointing to long-standing mental health issues that apparently went unaddressed, calling into question the role that America's mental health system plays in these types of incidents. Criminal accountability is essential, but so too is asking whether mental health supports and preventive care could have averted this crisis. Routh represented himself and did not pursue an insanity defense, which could have changed the parameters of this case.
