Once again, all critics claiming that the Trump administration would be unable to pull off its deportation program have been proven wrong. Such deals represent smart diplomacy, proving Trump's seriousness about delivering on his campaign promises and solving America's immigration crisis. Moreover, countries like Rwanda have proven track records of successfully integrating refugees and offer opportunities for deportees to rebuild their lives with job training and healthcare support.
The Trump administration's outrageous third-country deportation scheme most likely violates international law. The scheme sends vulnerable people to an unsafe country with which they have no personal ties and where they may face repression, without any chance to challenge their deportation. Furthermore, this practice treats African countries as a dumping ground for America's immigration problems while exploiting their economic plight for political gain.
It is argued that the Rwanda deportation deal is yet another example of how disrespectful the US and other Western countries treat African nations such as Rwanda, but this view is itself paternalistic. After all, it is the African countries themselves that agree to such deals, selling their dignity for political opportunism and to gain Washington's goodwill. Countries such as Senegal, Mauritania, and Liberia are setting a good example by rejecting such humiliating deals with Washington.
