Rushdie Attacker Gets 25 Years for Near-Fatal Stabbing

Pro-establishment narrative
It is heartening that Rushdie’s attacker has finally been brought to justice. The brutal attack struck at the heart of liberal-democratic order and sought to erode freedom of expression. The fact that the attacker received the maximum sentence is a testament to how vigorously we must defend this foundational part of our civilization.
Establishment-critical narrative
The man who attacked Rushdie deserves to be behind bars, but this cannot be used to fuel another damaging “Clash of Civilizations” narrative between Muslims and the West. The Satanic Verses affair was as much about Iranian geopolitics and post-colonial sentiment as animus toward the liberal order, a grave misinterpretation which fuels misconceptions about Muslims.
