These protests represent a legitimate expression of Spanish society's moral stance against genocide in Gaza. Spain has courageously led Europe in recognizing Palestinian statehood and supporting South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the UN. The overwhelming turnout of 100,000 demonstrators shows this isn't fringe activism. When Israeli teams can compete freely while Russian teams face bans for Ukraine, the double standard becomes glaring.
These protests don’t reflect a moral stance but a troubling trend of antisemitism disguised as activism. By backing false claims and singling out Israel while ignoring Hamas atrocities, Spain legitimizes hate. The prime minister's inflammatory comments and Spain’s recognition of “Palestine” and support for the baseless genocide case at the UN reward extremism and delegitimize Israel’s right to self-defense.
This represents an unacceptable politicization of sport that endangered athletes and embarrassed Spain internationally. Lawlessness resulted in 22 injured police officers and the unprecedented cancellation of a Grand Tour finale. Sports should remain neutral spaces where athletes compete safely, not become hostages to political agendas that turn peaceful competition into chaos and violence.
