PayPal Partners With OpenAI in ChatGPT Payments Agreement

PayPal announced on Tuesday that it will adopt the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) as part of its new partnership with OpenAI. The agreement will allow ChatGPT users to purchase goods through the chatbot with their PayPal accounts, starting in 2026.

ChatGPT users will be able to access PayPal's wallet features — including multiple funding options such as bank accounts, balances and cards, along with buyer and seller protections and post-purchase services like tracking.

The agreement will also enable PayPal to connect its global merchant network to OpenAI’s systems, which it claimed would create a platform within ChatGPT for "tens of millions of small businesses" and the world’s largest brands.

To support these merchants, PayPal announced that it would manage their routing, payment validation, and orchestration via the company’s dedicated ACP server, eliminating the requirement for individual businesses to handle the OpenAI integration process themselves.

Additionally, PayPal will equip its over 24,000 employees with access to ChatGPT Enterprise – an enhanced version with upgraded features, which it claimed would "accelerate product development, boost employee impact, and raise the bar on customer experiences."

The deal with PayPal is the latest in a series of commercial agreements OpenAI has made concerning its flagship product, including partnerships with online retailers Shopify and Etsy, as well as the retail giant Walmart.
