The tragic shooting, which should've been completely avoidable, underscores the urgent need for stricter gun control laws. Montana's lax regulations, including permitless concealed carry and guns on campuses, exacerbate its high gun death rates. With nine mass murders in the U.S. this year, including two in a week, national and state laws must address this preventable crisis to save lives.
This shooting reflects heated, impulsive acts, not a gun problem. Research shows violence stems from brief, emotional decisions, not firearms themselves. Even liberal court jurisdictions are beginning to notice the illogical and unconstitutional nature of gun control, as shown by California's 9th Circuit court striking down an ammunition law. Montana's high gun ownership isn't the issue — social and behavioral problems are.
