Memphis Gynecologist Charged with Sexual Abuse, Medical Fraud

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, a 44-year-old gynecologist in Memphis, Tennessee, has been arrested and charged with sexual abuse, medical fraud, and illegal reuse of medical devices.

Between September 2019 and June 2024, Kumar allegedly enticed four women to travel across state lines to his Poplar Avenue Clinic, where he conducted medically unnecessary procedures and subjected them to sexual abuse under the guise of medical examinations.

According to prosecutors, Kumar consistently reused single-use medical devices that were kept in unsanitary conditions, exposing patients to contamination from human tissue, discharge, and blood, all while failing to inform them about these dangerous practices.

In addition, Dr. Kumar fraudulently billed Medicare and Medicaid $2,515 for each procedure, becoming Tennessee's top-paid provider for hysteroscopy biopsies, which allow doctors to look inside the uterus.
