Israel's military presence in Syria is a necessary defensive tactic following the fall of the Assad regime. The strikes targeted former regime military assets that could threaten Israeli communities if they fall into hostile hands. Defense Minister Katz correctly emphasized that maintaining positions within Syria protects the Golan Heights and the Galilee from potential threats.
These Israeli actions constitute illegal occupation and expansion into Syrian territory under international law. Syria's sovereignty is being systematically violated through hundreds of strikes and seizure of additional territory that go well beyond the occupation of the Golan Heights. The U.N. has repeatedly condemned these breaches of the 1974 ceasefire agreement, and the United States must put more pressure on Israel to abandon its expansionist agenda.
