Hungary's Deputy Foreign Minister Levente Magyar announced the suspension of talks with Ukraine on the rights of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia in southwestern Ukraine, set to take place on Monday, in a Facebook post on Sunday.

He added that Hungary remains open to dialogue and that consultations could resume depending on what happens in the coming days. Two weeks ago, Magyar hosted Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Olha Stefanishyna, to discuss the matter.

This comes as a diplomatic crisis between Budapest and Kyiv broke out over an alleged Hungarian spy network in Zakarpattia. On Friday, Ukraine arrested two military veterans on charges of high treason and expelled two Hungarian diplomats — prompting Hungary to expel two Ukrainian diplomats in a tit-for-tat move.

According to Ukraine's Security Service, Hungary had established the network to collect intelligence — including the location and number of air defense systems, and on the public sentiment — in the bordering region of Zakarpattia, which is home to most of the 150,000 ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine.
