The Facts

A Cessna C550 business jet crashed at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina on Thursday morning, killing all seven people aboard. The aircraft had departed the airport shortly after 10 a.m. but attempted to return and crashed while trying to land.

Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, his wife, Cristina, 14-year-old daughter, Emma, and 5-year-old son, Ryder, were among those killed in the crash. Others on the plane were identified as Dennis Dutton, his son, Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.

Biffle won 19 Cup Series races during his career from 2002 to 2016 and claimed championships in both the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2002 and the Craftsman Truck Series in 2000. He was nominated for the NASCAR Hall of Fame and named one of NASCAR's 75 greatest drivers.

The plane was registered to GB Aviation Leasing LLC, a company run by Biffle. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft was bound for Florida but turned around shortly after takeoff and attempted to return to Statesville Regional Airport.
