The Spin

Government-critical narrative

APES is going into exile as press freedom in El Salvador has been under direct assault, with dozens of journalists fleeing the country in just three months. This is all but a surprising move, especially as others — from human rights activists to civil society organizations — had the same urge to escape from Nayib Bukele's authoritarian overreach.

Pro-government narrative

Many so-called journalists in El Salvador are not legitimate reporters, but actually paid political activists funded by foreign organizations such as Open Society Foundations. These agenda-driven operatives deliberately omit facts and distort narratives to undermine the government under the guise of press freedom. These days are over now that the Foreign Agents Law is in effect.
