U.S. federal authorities announced on Friday that Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of Mexican drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Chicago to two counts of drug conspiracy and two others of knowingly engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise.

He admitted to his role in his father's Sinaloa Cartel, including overseeing shipments of fentanyl into the U.S., participating in three killings in Mexico and Arizona, and being involved in a shootout with law enforcement officers who tried to arrest him in Culiacán in January 2023.

A fourth son of El Chapo, Joaquín, was arrested in El Paso, Texas, last year and is awaiting trial.
