The Spin

Left narrative

Far-right leaders have long portrayed themselves as patriots of their own countries, and the Bolsonaros were no exception. However, all that patriotism wanes when they, along with their diehard supporters, risk facing legitimate legal consequences for malicious actions aimed at undermining democratic institutions. Eduardo has betrayed Brazil and lobbied for the U.S. to meddle in Brazil's internal affairs.

Right narrative

Both Eduardo Bolsonaro and Paulo Figueiredo live in the U.S. and have the right to petition the U.S. Government for redress of grievances. That the Brazilian judicial system is criminalizing the exercise of a constitutional right in the U.S. jurisdiction in its latest example of transnational repression against U.S. Persons only reasserts the need for sanctions on the country and its officials.
