CONCACAF Rejects Greenland's Membership Application

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced on Monday that its member associations unanimously voted against the Greenlandic Football Association's bid to join the continental confederation at a meeting in Miami.

In response, Greenlandic soccer chief Kenneth Kleist said on Tuesday that a meeting with CONCACAF General Secretary Philippe Moggio has been requested to discuss the rejection amid claims that the application was "dismissed without further explanation."

This comes as the governing body for soccer in Greenland, known by the acronym KAK, applied for membership more than a year ago.

Acceptance into CONCACAF would have allowed Greenland to participate in international soccer tournaments for the first time, and to join the French territories of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, and Saint Martin, as well as the Dutch territories of Sint Maarten and Bonaire as non-FIFA CONCACAF members.

Home to 57,000 people, the world's largest island is a sovereign territory of Denmark located in North America. Due to regulations introduced in 2007 requiring U.N. recognition to admit new European member associations, Greenland is ineligible to join UEFA — unlike the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar.

Greenland reportedly has 76 football clubs, with about 10% of its population registered as players, and just 18 soccer pitches. As of now, its largest stadium, the 2,000-venue Nuuk Stadium, is not equipped to host international soccer games.

Greenland deserved this membership as the island demonstrated remarkable organization with comprehensive strategies, infrastructure planning, and widespread community support that rivals other small CONCACAF nations. This shameful decision denies thousands of passionate players and young dreamers the opportunity to take part in international matches and develop their game.

While the Greenlandic passion for the game is admirable, practical challenges make a potential membership troublesome —chief among them being the lack of adequate infrastructure and a stadium that meets international standards. Surprising as it is, CONCACAF finally did the right thing. For now, adding Greenland as a member would be a mistake.
