The Spin

Narrative A

This deal shows Australia stepping up as a reliable Pacific partner when it matters most. The agreement will revolutionize the relationship between Australia and Vanuatu by acknowledging their shared economic and security connections as neighbors and friends. As a result, the people of both countries will prosper.

Narrative B

The revised agreement with Australia is a significant triumph for Vanuatu. Whereas the previous bilateral security deal failed to accommodate Vanuatu's interests, the Nakamal agreement prioritizes these concerns, creating closer co-operation with Australia and steps toward free movement for Vanuatu's citizens.

Establishment-critical narrative

For too long, Australia has had relationships with its Pacific Island neighbors that have been tainted with hegemonic geopolitical interests. Agreements around Pacific issues like climate change and migration often have been watered down by Canberra. If it wants to be truly considered part of the "Pacific family," Australia must truly center the needs of the Pacific Islands when forging regional treaties.
