The Spin

Pro-Ukraine narrative

As Russia continues to weasel its way out of negotiations and spurn the idea of a ceasefire, it is concurrently continuing its attacks and deliberately killing civilians. Russia only understands pressure and force, so strong sanctions are needed to make Moscow feel the consequences and alter its course of action.

Pro-Russia narrative

Russia has repeatedly made clear that it does not target civilians. All strikes are directed at military targets, including military warehouses, fuel depots and training facilities, which is exactly the case in this instance.

Pro-establishment narrative

While the ongoing loss of innocent life will naturally inflame tensions, it is in Kyiv's best interests to look at the wider picture and consider the realities of a potential peace deal. A ceasefire with Russia would prevent further loss of life and give Ukraine the space needed to enact the internal political and legal reforms required to meet EU standards of democracy, thereby paving the way for closer integration with the West in the long-term.
