Ross has endured a bumpy ride as leader of the Scottish Tories, and while polling support has yet to crumble under the weight of Conservative misfortunes in Westminster, the region's next party leader will face an uphill battle. Scotland is poised to back Labour at the demise of the SNP, and the influence of populist anti-immigration politicians such as Nigel Farage continues to pull the UK Conservative Party further to the right. More moderate than their counterparts in Westminster, Scottish Tories now find themselves between a rock and a hard place, and it is no surprise that Ross has decided it is time to jump ship.
Douglas Ross has cemented himself as even worse a politician than the incapable Rishi Sunak. Having inevitably failed to balance the roles of MP, MSP, party leader, and football referee, the Scottish Tory has decided that the middle of a general election campaign is the perfect time to announce his resignation. Never truly committed to his role in Holyrood, Ross's legacy in Scotland is one of division and incompetence.
