Israel Says 170 Gaza Gunmen Killed in Hospital Raid

The Facts

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Saturday that more than 170 militants have been killed so far this week during its raid in and around Gaza's main al-Shifa hospital, adding that soldiers found "terrorist infrastructure" and weapons.

Medical personnel, however, have refuted allegations that the hospital is used for any military purposes, including to shelter fighters. According to Hamas representatives, those identified as killed were patients and displaced individuals.

In this ongoing operation against Hamas, which was launched on Monday, the IDF has also detained 800 individuals on suspicion of terrorism.

On Sunday, Israeli news outlet Kan News reported that two senior Hamas officials — Hisham Tzarzur and Diab Tatar — were arrested at the al-Shifa hospital.

Gaza's media office claimed on Thursday that 13 out of 22 patients in al-Shifa's intensive care unit who required specialized medical care died due to the lack of medicine, electricity, oxygen and food.

Witnesses reported that many buildings around the complex were burned and claimed that Israeli soldiers prevented rescue teams from reaching the area. Israel came under heavy criticism last November as its troops raided the facility for the first time, allegedly uncovering Hamas tunnels.

Israel is carrying out a genocide in Gaza. Its relentless assaults have left hospitals non-functional, healthcare workers killed or kidnapped, and those ill and wounded facing extreme challenges. Despite provisional orders from an international court, these attacks persist. The international community must take action to protect what is left of the enclave's healthcare infrastructure and stop this ethnic cleansing.

Tel Aviv has no choice but to continue fighting; after its horrific Oct. 7 attack on Israeli civilians, Hamas must be defeated in order to prevent future conflicts. If Israel were to pull back at this stage, the terrorists would only regroup, as they've done in the past. Given the lack of alternatives, there is no other way but to see this campaign through until Hamas is wiped out.
