Hezbollah Names Naim Qassem as New Leader

The Facts

Hezbollah announced Naim Qassem as its new leader on Tuesday, following the Israeli killing of its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah and his likely successor Hashem Safieddine. Israel has implied he would be assassinated soon "if he follows his predecessors."

Hezbollah said Qassem — one of the religious scholars who founded the group in the 1980s and has a long history in Shiite political activism — was elected to the position due to his "adherence to the principles and goals of Hezbollah."

Qassem became Hezbollah's deputy leader in 1991, serving under Nasrallah for over three decades. In 2018, the US imposed sanctions on him over his position in Hezbollah.

His appointment comes as the Israel Defense Forces claim to have achieved its military goals in Lebanon and that the Israeli government could now work toward a diplomatic resolution to end the conflict.

According to Lebanon's health ministry, Israeli strikes this week left at least 60 dead, including two children, in the eastern Beqaa Valley. At least 2.7K people have been killed and 1.3M displaced in Lebanon since the conflict broke out on Oct. 8, 2023.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, the UN's peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that its Naqoura headquarters was hit by rocket fire, blaming Hezbollah or "an affiliated group." In response, Israel — whose forces attacked UNIFIL positions several times last month — accused Hezbollah of systematically violating international law.

Naim Qassem will have the same fate as his predecessor Hassan Nasrallah. After killing the long-time terror leader, Israel was swiftly able to eliminate his most likely successor, Hashem Safieddine, and it will not be difficult to locate Qassem, even if he has reportedly fled to Tehran in fear of Israel's might.
