Russia is not bluffing. It would be a mistake not to take Moscow's threats seriously. Putin had agreed to a 60-day extension in March, hoping that sanctions and barriers to exporting Russian grain and fertilizer would ease by May 18. The West is not just set to dishonor its commitment, it is a shame the G7 countries are considering an outright ban on exports to Russia.
Putin must stop using the world's food as a weapon in its war on Ukraine. Despite Russia's claims, the EU and US sanctions do not hinder Russian food and fertilizer exports. In fact, Russia is deliberately delaying inspections of grain-carrying ships in Turkish waters in order to inflate prices and trying to milk concessions when Turkey and Ukraine are in a more vulnerable position than before.
