Smollett hoaxed his hate crime for publicity. His charlatanism was designed to slander former President Trump's politics and he continues to use racism as an excuse to avoid responsibility for his actions.
The actor's actions were disgraceful, but they shouldn't be allowed to distract from the fact that hate crime is very real and happens far too often. Now that the truth is out and punishment has been given, we must bury the case and move on.
