Ahmed Sékou Touré (1922-1984) was Guinea's first president and a prominent African independence leader. He led Guinea to independence from France in 1958, becoming the first French African colony to reject continued association with France. Touré ruled Guinea as a one-party socialist state until his death in 1984, implementing pan-Africanist policies while maintaining authoritarian control.
