Study: Global Fertility Falls Below Replacement for First Time

The Facts

  • A new paper by economists Jesús Fernández-Villaverde and Patrick Norrick argues that as of 2026, humanity is likely below replacement fertility for the first time in history — a threshold they estimate at roughly 2.20 births per woman globally, compared to the commonly cited 2.1 figure used for wealthier nations.

  • The paper, titled "Terra Incognita: The Economics of a Shrinking World," projects that world population will peak at roughly 9 billion around 2056 — nearly three decades earlier than the U.N.'s central projection of a peak near 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s.

  • Using a single-factor model covering 236 countries from 1950 to 2023, the authors found negative fertility trends in 219 of them, with a common global fertility component that peaked in 1978. Some of the steepest declines are occurring in middle-income countries, including Thailand, Tunisia, Algeria and Iran.

The Spin

Narrative A

Global fertility has fallen below replacement for the first time, and the real shock is that the collapse is hitting middle-income countries hardest — Thailand at 0.87 births per woman, Colombia at 1.01, while modernity makes a third child expensive and childlessness cheap. No economic incentive pushes fertility back to replacement, and South Korea shows how hard reversal can be stabilizing its population would require a huge baby boom, massive migration or extraordinary longevity. Slower GDP growth, strained pensions and shrinking labor forces are the new normal.

Narrative B

Falling birth rates are a policy and cultural problem, not an unstoppable fate. France shows that sustained pronatal policies — from tax breaks and child benefits to flexible childcare — can raise fertility, and modest gains compound into millions more people over generations. But policy alone is not enough, as societies also need norms, communities and role models that make marriage, parenthood and bigger families aspirational. Ultimately, demographic decline is not destiny.

Narrative C

Falling birth rates are not a civilization-ending crisis, but a consequence of social progress that societies should embrace rather than panic over. As women gain education, economic freedom and control over reproduction, families shrink alongside lower child mortality and greater prosperity. Fewer people could also mean less pressure on resources and ecosystems, while technology and rising productivity can sustain living standards without endless population growth.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that the global fertility rate will be at least 1.89 children per woman in 2050, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

UK PM Burnham Visits Kyiv, Unlocks Scalp Missile Data

The Facts

  • U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham arrived in Kyiv by train on Monday to mark Ukraine's 35th anniversary of independence — his first foreign visit since taking office.

  • During the trip, Burnham announced that European defense firm MBDA will be permitted to release classified information on British-made components of the Scalp long-range cruise missile, enabling France and Ukraine to establish local assembly lines for the weapon.

  • The Scalp missile is the French-produced equivalent of the U.K.'s Storm Shadow, and uses shared British and French technology. Both weapons have a range of around 150 miles and feature bunker-busting warheads.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Letting Ukraine build Scalp missiles is the correct moral and strategic move. Russian strikes on civilians and infrastructure demand stronger long-range deterrence. A safer Ukraine means a safer Britain, so backing Kyiv for the long haul is basic self-defense.

Government-critical narrative

Handing over secret missile plans is a reckless escalation. Storm Shadow tech still needs sensitive targeting data and hard production lines. With Moscow warning of consequences and Kyiv facing political strain, restraint beats deeper entanglement.

Nerd narrative

There's a 5% chance that Ukraine will join the EU before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

New Zealand Seeks Social Media Ban for Under-16s

The Facts

  • New Zealand's National Party introduced the Online Safety Bill in Parliament on Monday, seeking to ban children under 16 from social media platforms including Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook.

  • The bill would require platforms to verify users are over 16 using facial age estimation, digital ID and existing account information, with fines of up to 10% of global revenue for non-compliance.

  • The bill is unlikely to pass before parliament dissolves Oct. 1 ahead of a Nov. 7 election, as coalition partners ACT and NZ First have both said they will vote against it.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Social media is wrecking an entire generation, and New Zealand has been dragging its feet while the evidence piles up. Depression, anxiety and bullying are all tied to these platforms, which are designed to addict young minds for profit. Banning under-16s is the right call — big tech doesn't get to keep using kids as revenue sources while their mental health crumbles.

Government-critical narrative

A social media ban for under-16s sounds good on paper but falls apart the moment anyone asks how it gets enforced — banning VPNs or mandating digital ID is the only way it could work, and that's a serious threat to privacy and freedom. Australia's version has already been called a colossal failure, and copying it solves nothing. Parental rights, not government overreach, should be the foundation of any real solution.

Nerd narrative

There is a 40% chance any social-media account will reach 1 billion followers before 2031, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Shein Launches $1.77B Hong Kong IPO

The Facts

  • Shein launched its long-awaited Hong Kong IPO on Monday, offering 280 million shares priced between HK$47.60 ($6.07) and HK$49.50, with trading set to begin Sept. 1. The offering values the fast-fashion retailer at close to $27 billion and aims to raise up to $1.77 billion.

  • Shein's current IPO valuation of roughly $27 billion represents a drop of about 70% from the $98.2 billion private-market valuation it reached in 2022. The company was also valued at $64 billion in both 2023 and April 2024.

  • Shein swung to a $99 million quarterly loss in early 2026 after the U.S. removed the de minimis import duty exemption on small packages, which had previously allowed goods valued under $800 to enter duty free. The loss compared with a net income of $395 million in the same period a year earlier.

The Spin

Narrative A

Shein's Hong Kong IPO screams busted growth story. A $27 billion valuation, down from nearly $100 billion, plus a $99 million quarterly loss show cheap fashion loses shine once tariffs, supply chain scrutiny and tougher competition hit. Investors should pass.

Narrative B

Shein's Hong Kong IPO looks like a smart reset. A $1.77 billion raise can fund tech upgrades and global expansion, while $41.9 billion in 2025 revenue proves massive demand. Public markets should price Shein as a durable retail platform.

UK First in Europe to Dispense Lilly's Weight-Loss Pill

The Facts

  • Orforglipron, sold under the brand name Foundayo and manufactured by Eli Lilly, became available in U.K. pharmacies on Monday, making the country the first in Europe to approve and dispense the weight-loss pill.

  • The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) authorized the drug on Aug. 10 for adults with a BMI of 30 or above; a BMI of 27 to 30 with at least one weight-related condition; or to improve glycaemic control in poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.

  • It is initially available only via private prescription in the U.K., while the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which expects to publish its guidance on Nov. 18, assesses the medication for a potential NHS rollout.

The Spin

Narrative A

The U.K.’s approval of orforglipron is a massive win for those struggling with obesity. This once-daily pill, with no food or water restrictions, has been proven to deliver nearly 12.5% weight loss in trials and finally gives patients a flexible, accessible option. This approval is a step in the right direction.

Narrative B

While obesity pills like orforglipron deliver real weight loss, they also bring real trade-offs, including more side effects, lean muscle loss and no proven quality-of-life gains at the one-year mark. Fundamentally, they fail to address the root causes driving obesity rates higher every decade an unhealthy lifestyle, which only exercise, diet and environmental changes can fix.

Nerd narrative

There is an 84% chance that a small molecule GLP-based drug will be approved for the treatment of obesity by the FDA or EMA by 2029, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

30 Dead in Guinea Landfill Collapse

The Facts

  • At least 30 people were killed and 22 others injured when a mound of rubbish collapsed at the Dar Es Salam landfill in Conakry, Guinea, at around 2 a.m. local time on Sunday following heavy overnight rain that triggered a landslide burying nearby shacks.

  • The Dar Es Salam site was Guinea's largest open-air waste dump and had been scheduled for closure on the same Sunday the collapse occurred. Residents near the landfill had been issued eviction notices, though many remained in the area at the time of the disaster.

  • Guinea's Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the site to assess the damage and oversee rescue efforts, while Health Minister Khaïté Sall visited survivors in hospital and said the injured would receive free medical care.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

Guinea's staggering poverty — with 43.7% of the population below the national poverty line — helps explain why families stayed near a condemned landfill despite eviction orders. The government deployed military resources and the prime minister visited the site, showing a serious response. Blaming officials alone ignores the deeper structural crisis trapping people in dangerous living conditions with few alternatives.

Government-critical narrative

Thirty lives were lost in Conakry because authorities knew this landfill was dangerous and still failed to act in time — the site was slated to close the very day it collapsed. Heavy rains triggered the disaster, but the real culprit was bureaucratic delay in the face of clear and long-known risks. Eviction notices offered little protection when families had nowhere else safe to go, leaving them trapped beside a known hazard.

Nerd narrative

There is a 6% chance that there will be fewer than 375 million in extreme poverty by 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Over 50 Arson Attacks Hit Thailand's Southern Provinces

The Facts

  • More than 50 coordinated arson and incendiary attacks struck Thailand's southern border provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani between 8 p.m. and midnight on Saturday. Authorities said the incidents were "aimed at creating unrest."

  • At least three people were wounded in the attacks, including two women aged 45 and 46 and a 21-year-old man injured in a roadside bombing in Narathiwat. All three were hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.

  • Targets included local government offices, telecommunications towers, electrical poles and a 7-Eleven convenience store. The national railway operator also temporarily suspended part of a route in Narathiwat after finding damage on the tracks.

The Spin

Government-critical narrative

Knowing two months in advance that a major attack was coming and still failing to stop it is a massive security breakdown that demands accountability. At least 50 incidents tore through Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, and the Fourth Army still couldn't intercept a single suspect at checkpoints. Bringing in troops from outside the region created gaps that insurgents exploited — and that falls squarely on military leadership. It's time the government reviewed its strategy toward the southern insurgency.

Pro-government narrative

Guarding hundreds of thousands of electricity pylons and countless dispersed sites across three provinces at night with limited personnel is simply not feasible, so framing this as an intelligence failure misreads the situation entirely. These attacks were designed for psychological effect, not mass casualties, and the army's intelligence community was already tracking the broader threat. Demanding accountability based on incomplete, unverified accounts plays directly into the attackers' strategy.

Nerd narrative

There's a 41% chance that Thailand will experience a successful coup d'etat before 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Calif. Attorney General Bonta Cancels Paramount Talks

The Facts

  • California Attorney General Rob Bonta canceled a planned Monday meeting with Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, accusing Paramount of leaking details of a Friday prep session and acting in bad faith ahead of scheduled settlement talks.

  • Bonta is currently leading a coalition of 12 state attorneys general who are suing to block Paramount's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, alleging the deal would reduce competition in film distribution and cable television and raise costs for consumers.

  • The U.S. Dept. of Justice (DOJ) approved the planned merger one month before the multistate suit was filed in July, concluding that it does not harm U.S. consumers. A federal judge later temporarily paused the deal, saying that states had raised serious questions about its impact.

The Spin

Left narrative

Bonta was right to walk away from this meeting. This merger is a billionaire power grab that will cost thousands of jobs and drive up costs for everyday Americans. The antitrust case is rock-solid, and no amount of astroturf campaigns or political pressure from Trump-aligned insiders should water it down.

Right narrative

This was a transparent political stunt dressed up as principle by Bonta. Fellow California Democrats are pleading with him to settle because real Hollywood jobs are on the line. This lawsuit was really about leveraging the Attorney General's office to punish political enemies and reward the right donors.

Hawk Fire Forces 42,000 to Flee Near Reno

The Facts

  • The Hawk Fire, which began Saturday northwest of Reno, Nevada, grew to more than 15,000 acres by Sunday with 0% containment, prompting evacuation orders for approximately 42,000 residents and warnings for an additional 45,000.

  • Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized the Nevada National Guard, deploying two helicopter crews and 60 troops to support aerial firefighting and help police safeguard evacuated neighborhoods.

  • Officials confirmed the Hawk Fire was human-caused but said the investigation remained active and no further details on how it ignited had been released. At least six people — three civilians and three first responders — were injured.

The Spin

Narrative A

The Hawk Fire is a devastating reminder of how months of dry weather and a record lack of snow have turned the American West into a tinderbox — and communities near Reno are paying the price. Tens of thousands of people were forced from their homes, schools were shut down and hospitals evacuated patients as the human-caused blaze tore through 13,plus acres with zero containment. Stronger winds expected through the week mean this disaster is far from over.

Narrative B

The Hawk Fire exploded overnight because it was an extreme weather event that outpaced every available resource. With 42,000 under mandatory evacuation and shifting winds sending flames in unpredictable directions, the focus belongs on the heroic response from local, state and federal agencies working together. Blaming policy misses the point when nature moves faster than any plan can account for.

Trump Doubles Canada Auto Tariffs to 50% After Talk Collapse

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel will increase to 50% on Jan. 1, 2027, doubling the current 25% rate on Canadian auto imports.

  • Trump made the announcement via Truth Social, stating that companies building in the U.S. would face "ZERO TARIFFS" and that Canada would no longer "be treated like a State." The post accused Canada of creating a $60 billion deficit with the U.S.

  • The tariff threat followed the collapse of trade talks late Friday, after which 50% U.S. tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods — including wine, cement and hockey sticks — took effect early Saturday.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Canada walked away from a deal offering the world's best U.S. market access — steel and aluminum tariffs halved, major auto relief, softwood accommodations — and now wants to act surprised by the consequences. The U.S. runs a $60 billion deficit with Canada while Canadian barriers on American dairy, wine and autos go unchallenged. Doubling auto tariffs to 50% is the only rational response here, and worse consequences could follow if the arrogance and political gamesmanship don't stop.

Anti-Trump narrative

Trump's latest tariff threat, though not surprising, is unjustified and will hurt the very American workers it claims to protect — especially in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Alabama, whose auto industries depend heavily on Canadian demand. With new export markets opening, foreign investment growing and a plan to diversify beyond the U.S., Canada can stand on its own two feet without accepting terms that undermine its sovereignty, and Trump's escalating pressure will only accelerate that shift.
