U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address Thursday in which he announced the declassification of intelligence documents he said reveal vulnerabilities in U.S. election infrastructure, alleging China obtained 220 million U.S. voter files containing personal information. Newly released documents show Chinese intelligence services collecting voter registration data across multiple states, which Trump claimed revealed "shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure." However, a CNN review found none of the records support claims that any U.S. election result was altered by foreign interference or fraud.
The Department of Homeland Security sent letters to election officials in California, New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania, alleging a preliminary review found as many as 256,000 noncitizens registered to vote across the four states.

The strikes targeted bridges near Bandar Khamir, including a key road link between Bandar Abbas and Shiraz. On Friday, the U.S. attacked an Iranian oil tanker near Kharg Island.
Iran's Ministry of Energy asked residents to limit air conditioning use after U.S. strikes damaged power lines in southern Iran, disrupting the electricity supply to Bandar Abbas and surrounding areas. Temperatures in southern Iran have recently surpassed 120°F.

Nicaragua severed diplomatic relations with Italy on Thursday, with its Foreign Ministry citing comments by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who criticized the Central American country for sheltering Alessio Casimirri, who was convicted in the 1978 kidnapping and killing of former Prime Minister Aldo Moro.
Nicaragua's Foreign Ministry described Tajani's remarks as "unjustified, aggressive and irresponsible." Tajani had made the comments at a European People's Party summit in Madrid, saying Italy had nothing in common with what he called extremist governments such as Nicaragua's.
Moro, a former leader of Italy's Christian Democrats, was kidnapped by the Red Brigades in March 1978. The group demanded the release of imprisoned members in exchange for his safety, but his body was found in the trunk of a car in Rome roughly two months later.

Japan Revises Imperial Succession Law, Male-Only Rule Stays
Japan's parliament revised the Imperial House Law Friday to permit the adoption of unmarried male descendants 15 or older from 11 former imperial branch families and allow female members to retain royal status after marrying commoners, though status wouldn't apply to their spouses and children.

A 2021 expert panel confirmed male-line succession is the appropriate standard, and the revised Imperial Household Law responsibly addresses stability by allowing adoption of male relatives and letting princesses keep royal status after marriage.

Atmosphere On 'Earth-Like' Planet Detected for First Time
Astronomers have detected a helium-rich atmosphere around LHS 1140b, a rocky exoplanet orbiting within the habitable zone of a red dwarf star roughly 48 light-years from Earth — the first confirmed atmosphere on a habitable-zone rocky planet outside our solar system.
The findings, published in the journal Science on Thursday, are based on observations made in 2024 using the WINERED Spectrograph on the Magellan Observatory in Chile, which detected helium escaping from LHS 1140b's atmosphere. A follow-up observation in 2025 found no such signal.
LHS 1140b is approximately 5.6 times the mass of Earth and about 1.7 times its diameter. It completes one orbit around its host star every 24.7 days and is tidally locked, meaning it always presents the same face to its star.

White House teleprompter operator Gabriel Perez was placed on unpaid administrative leave on Thursday after allegedly using inside knowledge of President Donald Trump's prepared remarks to win more than $100,000 on the prediction market platform Kalshi.
Perez, who has operated Trump's teleprompter since 2016 and earned $175,000 annually as a deputy assistant to the president, is in settlement talks with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) over bets placed on more than a dozen Trump speeches.
The bets were placed on Kalshi's "Mentions" market, where users wager on whether specific words, phrases or topics will be spoken during public events. Speeches involved included the February State of the Union, a January address at the World Economic Forum in Davos and a March Medal of Honor ceremony.

In that environment, who can blame Perez for playing the odds?
Taco Bell Lettuce Supplier Linked to Cyclosporiasis Outbreak
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Thursday that shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia has been linked to a multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak, with 1,644 laboratory-confirmed cases reported across those five states.
Nearly 7,000 people have confirmed or suspected cases of cyclosporiasis across at least 34 states since May 1, with Michigan reporting the highest case count. At least 180 hospitalizations have been recorded nationally, though no deaths have been reported.
The FDA's traceback investigation identified a single supplier of shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico used at affected Taco Bell locations. Sources familiar with the investigation identified the supplier as California-based Taylor Farms, which did not respond to requests for comment.
Establishment-critical narrative
This outbreak is a direct consequence of gutting federal public health infrastructure. Mass Health and Human Services layoffs eliminated the very CDC employees who track foodborne outbreaks, and dropping cyclospora from active surveillance let this spread unchecked while states scrambled alone. Taco Bell may be part of the story, but the real culprit is the government's dismantling of vital infrastructure.
Pro-establishment narrative
Blaming the Trump administration for this outbreak misreads how disease surveillance actually works. FoodNet tracks long-term trends. It was never designed for real-time outbreak response, and its scaling back predates recent cuts. Cyclospora remains nationally reportable through a separate database, so the investigators working this outbreak have the tools they need to trace the source and stop further illness.

Although thousands have been sickened this summer, there's no need to panic about the cyclosporiasis outbreak. Fruits and veggies are still safe and healthy to eat. There are measures consumers can take to make sure their fresh produce is safe and they should consider buying whole heads of lettuce instead of pre-chopped bags. Simple precautions, not avoidance, are the smart move here.
Canada: Ontario Wildfires Force Evacuations, US Calls for Action
According to government figures as of Friday, 13 First Nations communities had been evacuated due to wildland fires across Canada, with 2,182 individuals displaced. Ontario accounted for seven of those evacuated communities, the highest of any province.
Namaygoosisagagun (Collins) First Nation in northwestern Ontario was destroyed by a fast-moving wildfire on Tuesday, with over two dozen residents escaping by boat as flames engulfed the community in less than an hour.
Ontario's emergency preparedness minister formally requested federal assistance on Wednesday, including possible Canadian Armed Forces deployments, to help expedite evacuations from remote northern communities affected by wildfires.

Ontario's government has thrown every available resource at the wildfire crisis — plus fire crews, 80 aircraft and Canadian Armed Forces support — and the fact that no lives have been lost proves the response is working. Spending nearly $1.5 billion on wildland firefighting since 2018 and doubling base funding to $150 million annually isn't a talking point, it's a record. Politicizing this crisis with misinformation while communities are being kept safe is flat-out disgraceful.
Government-critical narrative
Ontario and Ottawa cannot declare victory while First Nations communities are evacuated, homes are destroyed, and families flee by boat. Governments have focused on smoke impacts and public messaging while Indigenous communities face evacuation delays, inadequate support, and bureaucratic barriers. Collins was lost amid this failure. As leaders advance new pipelines and fossil fuel projects, they ignore the climate crisis worsening wildfires and forcing First Nations to bear the consequences instead.

U.S. families should not have to pay the price for Canada's failure to manage its forests and prevent recurring disasters. American politicians and President Trump demanding penalties over Canadian wildfire smoke ignore the reality on the ground firefighters are battling hundreds of fires and risking their lives to protect communities. Instead of threats of tariffs or sanctions, the U.S. should offer support, as Canada has done during American disasters like in California. Turning a shared wildfire crisis into political attacks ignores the sacrifices of those fighting the flames.
UK: Andy Burnham Delivers First Speech as Labour Leader
Andy Burnham was confirmed as U.K. Labour Party leader at a special party conference at the TUC headquarters in London on Friday after securing nominations from 379 of the 403 Labour lawmakers in the House of Commons. He is set to become prime minister on Monday.
In his first speech as leader, Burnham called for a break from factional politics, saying "factionalism has bedevilled us" and pledging to build a culture of "one Labour team." He said Labour could not defeat "Britain's new right" if consumed by infighting.
Burnham argued in his speech that Britain took "a series of wrong turns in the 1980s" when political power was centralized and economic power privatized, and pledged to reverse that trend by transferring control of essential services to local communities.

Andy Burnham's rise to Labour leader marks a genuine break from four decades of neoliberalism that hollowed out working-class communities across Britain. His commitment to devolving power from Westminster, bringing essentials like housing and transport back under public control, and ending Labour's factional infighting is exactly what the country needs. This is the most significant political shift in 40 years, and Burnham has the plan and the conviction to deliver it.
Right narrative
Burnham's big talk about hope comes with a hefty price tag. His tax proposals on inheritance, capital gains and property are vague, structurally complex and riddled with unintended consequences. Burnham has spent a career reinventing himself to fit whatever Labour needed, and there's little reason to trust the substance behind the slogans this time. Labour has totally and utterly lost its mandate to lead the nation, and Burnham does nothing to change this.
