Renewables Surpass Coal in Global Electricity for First Time

Photo: Unsplash

The Facts

  • Renewable energy sources including solar and wind power generated more electricity than coal globally for the first time in the first half of 2025, according to an analysis of data from 88 countries — representing 93% of worldwide demand — by the energy think tank Ember.

  • Global solar generation increased by 31% in the first six months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, meeting 83% of the worldwide increase in electricity demand, while wind power expanded by approximately 7.7% during the same timeframe.

  • China led the renewable energy expansion by adding more solar and wind capacity than all other countries combined, resulting in a 2% decrease in fossil fuel generation. Meanwhile, India experienced similar reductions, with coal falling 3.1% and gas dropping 34%.

The Spin

Optimist narrative

Solar and wind power have achieved a historic breakthrough, demonstrating that clean energy can meet increasing global electricity demand. This milestone signifies that renewables are no longer niche but have become mainstream technologies driving the entire power system forward. Accelerated investment in solar, wind and battery storage will deliver clean, affordable electricity to communities worldwide.

Cynical narrative

Despite renewable growth, the transition faces serious infrastructure challenges that threaten reliability and cost taxpayers billions. Wind and solar's intermittent nature forces energy providers to pay farms to stop producing during peak times, then pay gas plants to fill gaps. Without massive grid upgrades and storage solutions, this costly inefficiency will only worsen as renewable energy sources expand.

Nerd narrative

There's a 93% chance that renewable energy will contribute between 25% and 48% to global electricity production in 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

CDC: COVID-19 Vaccine Decisions Will Be Made on Individual Basis

The Facts

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its immunization schedules on Monday, adopting individual-based decision-making for COVID-19 vaccination rather than blanket recommendations for all Americans aged 6 months and older.

  • The new recommendations follow guidance from a reconstituted Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, appointed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to replace the previous panel of infectious disease experts, which had recommended annual boosters.

  • The CDC now recommends that children under four receive separate chickenpox and measles-mumps-rubella vaccines rather than the combined MMRV shot, which doubles the risk of febrile seizures without providing additional protection.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

The CDC's new COVID vaccine guidance creates dangerous barriers that will leave vulnerable Americans unprotected. Kennedy's anti-vaccine crusade has shattered the scientific consensus, replacing expert recommendations with confusing state-by-state policies. This reckless approach puts lives at risk in advance of inevitable winter surges.

Republican narrative

The CDC has finally restored informed consent by ending blanket COVID booster mandates that ignored individual risk factors. The previous one-size-fits-all approach deterred doctors from discussing the real risks and benefits of vaccines with patients. This evidence-based shift protects Americans from unnecessary medical interventions.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that COVID-19 will be eradicated before 2091, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Senate Rejects Both Parties' Bills as Shutdown Enters Day 7

The Facts

  • The U.S. government shutdown entered its seventh day after the Senate rejected proposals from both the Democrats and the Republicans to fund the government on Monday, with neither gaining the 60 votes required to advance.

  • The Republican measure gained 52 votes, including the support of Democratic senators John Fetterman and Catherine Cortez Masto. The Democratic motion, meanwhile, received 45 votes, including that of Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who also voted against the proposal of his own party.

  • The Republican House bill would have continued federal funding at current levels until Nov. 21, 2025, while the Democrats’ continuing resolution (CR) included a permanent extension of the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits and a reversal of the Medicaid cuts under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

The Spin

Republican narrative

The government shutdown is a crying shame for America. Democrat bad-faith negotiating threatens both U.S. prosperity and the countless essential government programs that everyday Americans rely on. If the Democrats really want to fix health care, they should first allow the government to reopen, and abandon their radical demands in order to work cooperatively with the administration.

Democratic narrative

Accountability for this government shutdown, and all the harm that will accompany it, rests solely with the Trump administration. Whereas the Democrats are open and eager to engage in productive talks to settle the health care crisis, the Republicans are nowhere to be seen. Instead of negotiating in good faith, the administration has chosen to stall the government altogether.

Cynical narrative

As Democrats and Republicans trade blame for the ongoing crisis, they ignore the hard truth this dysfunction is the product of their shared failure, rooted in years of partisan posturing and political brinkmanship. Budgetary standoffs have become the norm, eroding vital institutions, shaking public confidence and putting petty politics above the needs of everyday Americans. This cycle of mismanagement must end — now.

Nerd narrative

There's a 30% chance that the U.S. government shutdown will end before October 15, 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

UK: Police Bust International Phone Smuggling Ring

The Facts

  • The Metropolitan Police have dismantled an international smuggling gang suspected of exporting up to 40,000 stolen phones from the U.K. to China over the past 12 months, representing approximately 40% of all phones stolen in London during that period.

  • Operation Echosteep began in December after officers discovered a box containing approximately 1,000 iPhones set to be shipped to Hong Kong at a warehouse near Heathrow Airport, with almost all devices confirmed as stolen.

  • Two men in their 30s, codenamed Heron and Seagull by police, were arrested in north-east London and charged with handling stolen goods after officers found phones in their car and approximately 2,000 more devices at connected properties.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

London police just pulled off the UK's largest phone theft crackdown, dismantling international smuggling rings and arresting dozens of criminals. While more must be done, the Met has driven down robbery by 13% and theft by 14%, while solving 163% more shoplifting cases than last year. Trust in police remains strong at 73% as officers focus resources on the crimes that matter most to communities.

Establishment-critical narrative

London's crime crisis is spiraling out of control, with knife attacks up 10% and the Met catching only one in 170 phone thieves. Even the capital's high-end districts have become dangerous no-go zones. Elite politicians living in leafy suburbs dismiss these concerns while ordinary Londoners face daily threats from brazen criminals who know they won't face the consequences for their crimes.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that the England and Wales prison rate will be at least 129 per 100,000 five years after Labour's general election victory, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trump Ponders Insurrection Act Amid Chicago Raid Backlash

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that he would consider invoking the Insurrection Act if courts or local officials impede his National Guard deployment plans, saying he'd act "if people were being killed" and officials were holding up federal operations.

  • Illinois Governor JB Pritzker accused the Trump administration of conducting a military-style invasion of Chicago, alleging federal agents used Black Hawks and over 100 tactical agents during immigration raids for social media purposes.

  • Federal District Judge Karin Immergut, a Trump appointee, blocked the administration from deploying National Guard troops to Portland twice, ruling the protests did not constitute rebellion and citing principles of constitutional law.

The Spin

Anti-Trump narrative

Trump's federal deployment scheme creates manufactured chaos to justify invoking the Insurrection Act and militarize Democratic cities. Border Patrol raids and chemical attacks on protesters prove this administration weaponizes federal forces as political props. Trump should anticipate fightback against these unconstitutional power grabs that violate state sovereignty.

Pro-Trump narrative

Portland's ongoing violence is pure insurrection that obstructs federal law enforcement and threatens public safety. Anti-ICE riots blocking federal buildings and attacking officers justify military deployment under established constitutional authority. Democratic governors enable lawlessness by refusing federal assistance to restore order.

Nerd narrative

There's a 14% chance that President Trump will formally invoke the Insurrection Act before 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Price of Gold Reaches All-Time High, Surpasses $4,000 an Ounce

The Facts

  • Gold prices topped $4,000 per ounce for the first time on Tuesday, reaching an intraday high of $4,014.60 before closing at $4,004.40.

  • The price of the commodity has risen by around 50% this year, with reports claiming the climb is being driven by central bank buying, increased demand for gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), as well as uncertainty in global trade and geopolitics.

  • This comes as outgoing French prime minister Sébastian Lecornu resigned from his post on Monday after a record short 27 days, while Japan's markets saw jolts after prospective Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was elected head of the country's ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

The Spin

Narrative A

These highs in gold prices are being driven by the significant anxiety in global markets. Investors are reacting to a myriad of factors causing uncertainty in the world economy, be it the U.S. government shutdown or the political developments in France and Japan.

Narrative B

It is highly unusual for both gold and stock prices to be up, suggesting there is a growing bubble waiting to burst. As soon as that happens, we can expect to see a course correction and a global recession.

Nerd narrative

There's a 40% chance of recession in the U.S. in 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Three Scientists Win 2025 Nobel Prize for Quantum Discovery

The Facts

  • The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded on Tuesday to John Clarke of UC Berkeley, Michel Devoret of Yale University and UC Santa Barbara and John Martinis of UC Santa Barbara for discovering macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling in electrical circuits.

  • The three scientists conducted experiments in 1984 and 1985 at UC Berkeley using superconducting circuits called Josephson junctions, which demonstrated quantum tunneling effects in systems large enough to hold in one's hand.

  • Their research showed that electrons moving through superconducting circuits could behave as a single quantum particle, tunneling through barriers and exhibiting quantized energy levels similar to individual atoms.

The Spin

Techno-optimist narrative

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics is a monumental breakthrough that bridges the gap between quantum mechanics and the tangible world. Clarke, Devoret and Martinis proved that quantum effects can operate on macroscopic scales through Josephson junctions. This foundational 1985 work directly enables today's quantum computing revolution and advances in cryptography.

Techno-skeptic narrative

Quantum computing remains plagued by controversy and overhype despite decades of promises. Microsoft's disputed claims about topological qubits show researchers can't even agree on basic results. The technology won't deliver practical applications for at least another decade, risking a quantum winter when disappointed investors flee.

Nerd narrative

There's a 30% chance that a Russian will win a Nobel Prize in Physics before 2035, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Hamas: Negotiations to End War, Release Hostages 'Positive' So Far

The Facts

  • Hamas reportedly said on Tuesday that negotiations focused on ending the Gaza war and releasing the hostages have been "positive" so far. A Hamas delegation is currently in Egypt for indirect talks, with a senior official in the group saying that Hamas is seeking to overcome all obstacles to achieving a settlement.

  • U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law who has advised the president on Middle Eastern matters in the past, are expected to join the talks on Wednesday.

  • Separately, hundreds gathered in southern Israel to mark the second anniversary of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack, which killed over 1,100 people and saw 250 people taken into captivity in Gaza. In turn, over 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in the resulting war, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Israel's war against Hamas is surely just, given the atrocities the group committed during its Oct. 7 attack. However, the war has gone on for far too long, and Israel has increasingly lost the moral high ground. Israel risks pushing Palestinians into Hamas' hands if it does not end the war and work to ensure the safety of civilians.

Pro-Israel narrative

Though the world has largely forgotten the horrors of Oct. 7, every Israeli remembers what Hamas did that fateful day. Children were butchered and women were assaulted. Everything that has happened in Gaza since then has been in response to Hamas' barbarism. Still, Israel is a strong nation and has worked to pick up the pieces. The only way for this tragedy to end is for Hamas to surrender.

Pro-Palestine narrative

It should be clear after two years of grinding brutality that Israel's true goal is to destroy Gaza and starve its people. Nothing justifies what Israel has done in Gaza, which can only be described as genocide. Furthermore, the world has, at best, sat back and watched or, at worst, supported Israel as it butchered Gaza's people. Israel's genocidal ambitions will only come to an end when it faces meaningful consequences.

Trump, Carney Meet Amid US-Canada Trade Tensions

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met in the Oval Office on Tuesday, with Trump describing their relationship as having "natural conflict" but also "mutual love" due to competing business interests between the neighboring countries.

  • Discussions focused on U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and automotive sectors, as well as the upcoming 2026 review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Trump promised to treat Canada “fairly” and suggested openness to renegotiating the pact or forming separate deals, while Carney emphasized that the two countries are "stronger together" in most areas despite some competition.

  • Since March, the United States has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Canadian steel and aluminum, along with additional duties on copper, auto parts and lumber, while Canada has maintained counter-tariffs on some U.S. goods.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Canada’s economy is faltering under Trump’s tough but effective trade policies, with unemployment at 7.1% — the highest in nearly a decade — and GDP shrinking as companies relocate south. Tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos, lumber and soon heavy trucks are pressuring Ottawa to make real concessions instead of empty gestures. Trump’s approach is working it’s strengthening U.S. industry, boosting revenue and forcing Canada to the table ahead of the 2026 USMCA review.

Anti-Trump narrative

Trump’s tariffs on Canada are a reckless act of economic nationalism that punishes American workers as much as Canadian ones. They disrupt supply chains, raise consumer prices and alienate one of the United States’ closest allies for no strategic gain. This isn’t strength — it’s self-sabotage dressed up as patriotism.

Liberal Party narrative

Canada's patient approach to Trump's tariffs is working better than critics claim. Facing a U.S. president who wields tariffs as leverage, Carney is keeping dialogue open and expectations realistic, building trust directly with Trump while avoiding hasty, one-sided deals like those struck by Japan and the EU. With 85% of exports still tariff-free and pressure mounting on U.S. consumers and industry, Canada’s long game preserves leverage — and in this climate, even no deal may be wiser than a bad one.

Conservative Party narrative

Canada’s patient approach has become an excuse for failure. Tariffs have doubled, companies are fleeing south and Ottawa has surrendered key tools like counter-tariffs and the digital services tax without securing anything in return. “No deal” isn’t a strategy — it’s a symptom of weak leadership. Canadians deserve more than photo ops and vague promises; they need a government that will fight to scrap "Buy American" rules, lift crippling tariffs and deliver real wins that put Canadian workers first.

Nerd narrative

There's a 25% chance that the USMCA will be extended promptly at its July 2026 joint review, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Attorney General Bondi Faces Senate Hearing

The Facts

  • U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. She faced questions about allegations that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has been weaponized under her leadership and she defended her role as the nation's top law enforcement official.

  • During the hearing, Bondi engaged in heated exchanges with Democratic senators. She told Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) that she wishes he "loved Chicago as much" as he hates President Donald Trump when questioned about National Guard deployments to that city.

  • Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) questioned Bondi about the recent revelation that the FBI obtained phone records for nine Republican lawmakers during the special counsel investigation into Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Bondi said she discussed it with FBI Director Kash Patel.

The Spin

Republican narrative

Bondi brilliantly exposed the Democrats' hypocrisy during her Senate hearing, turning their partisan attacks back on them and highlighting their ties to Epstein. Democrats weaponized the DOJ for years under former Attorney General Merrick Garland, yet now they're crying foul when Republicans demand accountability.

Democratic narrative

Bondi's combative performance revealed a dangerous erosion of DOJ independence through her contemptuous refusal to answer basic oversight questions. Instead, she fired off prepared personal attacks on senators. This coordinated strategy transforms accountability hearings into a form of political theater.

Nerd narrative

There's a 15% chance that Pam Bondi will be out as U.S. attorney general before March 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
