Larry Nassar Victims Sue FBI for Over $1B

The Facts

  • More than 90 women who say they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar – including Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Maggie Nichols, McKayla Maroney, and Aly Raisman – are suing the FBI for a total of more than $1B for failing to act on the abuse.

  • The lawsuits draw on a report from the DOJ's Inspector General that said Nassar continued to see - and assault - patients for 14 months after USA Gymnastics first notified the FBI of his sexual abuse crimes in 2015.

  • Nassar pled guilty to his crimes in Jan. 2018 and was sentenced to up to 175 years for sexually assaulting hundreds of women and girls, and 60 years for child pornography charges.

The Spin

Narrative A

Had the FBI acted when it was first made aware of the allegations, Nassar wouldn't have been able to abuse hundreds more girls following the initial claims. Innocent until proven guilty is one thing, but there was substantial evidence of Nassar's guilt for years before anything was done about it. More than 300 underage girls were abused by Nassar during his career and the FBI's incompetence enabled him.

Narrative B

It wasn't just the FBI and individual agents who failed these women but the system itself. Coaches, doctors, psychologists, the USA Gymnastics and local police all received reports of the abuse but nothing was done. In his position of power, Nassar used his prestige to build credibility and allow the crimes to continue unquestioned.

Iran Dismantles Nuclear Monitoring Systems After IAEA Censure

The Facts

  • On Wed., Iran announced that it turned off systems used by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to monitor uranium enrichment at an undisclosed nuclear facility.

  • This comes after Western powers backed an IAEA resolution to censure Iran for not cooperating with a probe into its nuclear activities.

  • The 35-member board approved the resolution 30-2, with three abstentions and China and Russia in opposition.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

The IAEA acts as if Iran is obligated to cooperate, when in fact it has been doing so voluntarily until now, as a show of goodwill. Tehran's decision to turn off non-mandatory monitoring systems is simply retaliation to anti-Iran resolutions.

Pro-establishment narrative

Iran is playing with fire. Several documents prove that it has consistently lied to the international community regarding its nuclear program. Swift action must be undertaken to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon.

Nerd narrative

There is a 45% chance that Iran will possess a nuclear weapon by 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

COVID: Moderna Says New Vaccine Protects Against Omicron

The Facts

  • In a release on Wed., Moderna announced that data has shown a new version of its COVID vaccine to be more effective in protecting against the virus.

  • Their studies reportedly show that the new dose offers recipients better chances of producing antibodies against Omicron. Dr Stephen Hodge, president of Moderna, has said that the company believes the findings support the implementation of the new vaccine.

  • Moderna plans to submit its findings - that vaccines targeting both the original and Omicron strains produce a stronger immune response - to the FDA in the coming weeks and seek authorization for the bivalent vaccine.

The Spin

Narrative A

With concerns over waning vaccine immunity and the potential for a surge in cases in the fall, these results should be celebrated. Though some are worried about what role COVID will have in our daily lives when summer draws to a close, a highly effective bivalent vaccine could be the first step on the roadmap to annual COVID treatments and a return to normality.

Establishment-critical narrative

Whilst Moderna deserves credit for developing and rolling out an effective COVID vaccine with astounding speed, they are now profiteering from the virus. The pharmaceutical giant made $7.3B in after-tax profits in the first three quarters of 2021, now it is seeking further authorization to continue global sales.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that at least 95.3k people will be reported to have died per year from COVID-19 on average between 2025 in the US, according to the Metaculus prediction community

Report: US Failed To Assess Civilians Killed By US Weapons In Yemen War

The Facts

  • An internal report from the Government Accountability Office indicates that Washington has failed to evaluate the number of civilians killed by the Saudi coalition in Yemen and the role of US weapons in the casualties.

  • According to the report, the State Dept. and Pentagon authorized the delivery and maintenance of fighter jets and munitions used by the alliance in its deadly attacks.

  • The report, which covers the period from 2015 - when the war began - to 2021, is the second official probe by a US agency. A State Dept. inspector general released a report in 2020 that also pointed to deficiencies in preventing civilian casualties in the Yemen war.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

The US likes to make big claims about defending worldwide freedom and human rights, but is quick to turn a blind eye when it serves its interests - as seen in Yemen. If the US is serious about a rules-based world order, it needs to start playing by the rules itself.

Pro-establishment narrative

There's no doubt that a humanitarian tragedy is taking place in Yemen. However, it was the right decision to side with the internationally recognized Yemeni government and stand up to the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The US has been advocating for a peace deal for some time and the recent truce extension is impressive evidence of these efforts.

Cynical narrative

The war in Yemen, now in its eighth year, is every bit as brutal as what's taking place in Ukraine. The West's failure to address this humanitarian disaster or cover it in the media with any sort of urgency says a lot about its inherent bias and who it considers worthy and unworthy victims.

Day 106 Roundup: 'Fate of Donbas' Hangs on Battle for Severodonetsk, Zelenskyy Says

The Facts

  • In his nightly address on Wed., Ukrainian Pres. Zelenskyy said fierce fighting continued in the Luhansk city of Severodonetsk, describing it as "probably one of the most difficult during this war." He added: "The fate of Donbas is being decided there."

  • Earlier, Luhansk governor Serhiy Haidai said: "Our [forces] now again control only the outskirts of the city. But the fighting is still going on, our [forces] are defending Severodonetsk. It is impossible to say the Russians completely control the city."

  • In a later update on Thurs. morning, Haidai said: "Silence in Severodonetsk lasts only when guns are reloaded," and added the city was being pounded by heavy artillery. Civilian evacuations from the city were no longer possible, he said.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

As the war shifts to the strategically important Donbas regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, the US and its allies need to continue to do everything in their power to arm Ukraine with all the weapons they need. Doing so is the only way to push Putin's forces back as was done in Kyiv.

Pro-Russia narrative

As stated by Putin, the whole purpose of the war was never to invade Kyiv, but to liberate the ethnically Russian people of Donetsk and Luhansk, who have been subjected to systematic killing by Ukrainian forces for not recognizing the 2014 coup in Kyiv. This tragedy would have been avoided if NATO had kept its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that more than 100,000 people will be killed in the Russo-Ukrainian War in 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

EU to Make USB-C Port Universal

The Facts

  • On Tues., the EU reached an agreement requiring all cellphones and handheld electronic devices to have a USB-C charging port.

  • This is reportedly part of a wider effort to cut down on electronic waste and make the 27-nation bloc more sustainable. A universal charger could lead to fewer carbon dioxide emissions, and reduce the number of disposed chargers.

  • Most devices, including tablets, digital cameras, and video game consoles, have to comply by 2024, while laptop manufacturers have until 2026.

The Spin

Narrative A

This is a common-sense victory for the environment and for consumer convenience. As for Apple, it already has USB-C ports on many of its devices. It's time for the tech giant to stop being defiant and fully switch over.

Narrative B

This might be more convenient for consumers, but it remains to be seen whether it'll save people money. When new iPhones are released, older versions are usually discounted, allowing many consumers to opt for cheaper versions. Banning devices without USB-C charging ports could eliminate that option.

House Passes Gun Bill, Unlikely to Clear Senate

The Facts

  • The House on Wed. voted 223-204 to pass gun legislation raising the minimum age to buy a semi-automatic rifle to 21 and banning ammunition magazines holding more than 15 rounds.

  • The vote demonstrated the continued divide over gun laws, with all but five Republicans voting against the bill and all but two Democrats voting in favor.

  • The bill also includes gun storage provisions – with a penalty of fines and prison if ignored and subsequently used by a minor – and regulations on bump-stock devices and ghost guns.

The Spin

Republican narrative

The party now calling for gun control is the same party that was recently calling to defund the police. Who's supposed to protect us when first responders can't? We shouldn't be banning guns, we should be getting rid of gun-free zones and funding non-partisan firearm education programs to help protect ourselves from evil actors.

Democratic narrative

The family members of the victims who came out to testify so soon after enduring such a devastating loss are a testament to courage and selflessness. If only the Republican members of Congress could summon these qualities and stand up to the gun lobby to support sensible gun reforms, as wanted by the majority of the American public.

Cynical narrative

In incidents like these, both the right and left talk extensively about how to prevent these tragedies. But sadly their words don't translate into actions that curb the violence.

Nerd narrative

There is a 1% chance that the Second Amendment, as written and in force on December 13th, 2018, will be successfully amended or repealed before Jan. 1, 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

DeSantis Press Secretary Registers as Foreign Agent

The Facts

  • A spokeswoman for Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis' (R) has retroactively registered as a foreign agent after reportedly being contacted by the US Justice Dept. and instructed to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).

  • It was recently disclosed that Christina Pushaw - who has been working as Desantis' press secretary since May 2021 - worked for Georgia Pres. Mikheil Saakashvili between 2018 - 2020.

  • According to her attorney, she lived in Georgia in 2018 and helped advocate for Saakashvili by writing op-eds and reaching out to officials and supporters. Over the course of two years, she was reportedly paid $25K to cover some of her living expenses.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Pushaw has gained fame by making outrageous statements on social media, but most of her notoriety has come from fashioning herself as an "America First" advocate - ironic now that she has been revealed as a foreign agent.

Republican narrative

This is clearly a smear campaign. The only reason Pushaw is being attacked is because she does a great job as press secretary and effectively calls out phony narratives - this is yet another hit piece against the DeSantis administration.

House Passes Bill to Provide Extra Security for SCOTUS Justices

The Facts

  • The US House of Representatives voted 396-27 Tues. on a bill that provides security to the family members of SCOTUS justices. The 27 "NO" votes were all Dems.

  • The bill passed unanimously in the Senate last month after a leaked draft indicated that SCOTUS is likely to overturn Roe v. Wade, but it has been stalled by Dems. in the House who sought to include security for other SCOTUS staff beyond the justices.

  • Republicans balked at the Dems.' demands, with Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnel stating the House version of the bill "is not going to pass the Senate."

The Spin

Republican narrative

Justices have become a target by radical pro-abortionists since the leaked draft, and the attempted attack on Kavanaugh highlights the urgency of this bill. It was unconscionable for Dems to delay protection for justices and their families.

Democratic narrative

Refusing protection for other Supreme Court staff is a hill McConnell and his Republican colleagues are prepared to die on. The leaked draft, which could easily have been released by a conservative, has put even lower-level staff like clerks in potential danger, which is why the Dems. looked to give them protection, too. This shows, yet again, that the Republican Party only cares about protecting the most powerful.

GOP Sens. Allege Biden Admin. Lied About Disinformation Board

The Facts

  • Republican Sens. Chuck Grassley (IA) and Josh Hawley (MO) released documents on Wed. alleging the Disinformation Governance Board was intended to not only focus on foreign disinformation but on the speech of American citizens, too.

  • The two Sens. are calling on the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) to provide more details regarding its plans for coordinating the controversial disinformation board.

  • DHS Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas has repeatedly said the board would focus on foreign actors, but the Sens. allege that documents provided by a whistleblower reveal they were focused on disinformation in areas where there are "clear, objective facts," without reference to national origin.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Digital platforms have done some incredibly positive things. But they've also enabled the weaponization of disinformation, which has rapidly increased in its ability to threaten our democracy. Since the market can't solve this on its own, government regulation is necessary.

Establishment-critical narrative

The DHS is gaslighting the nation when it claims it wants to protect against disinformation. This is the last agency that should be allowed to decide what is and isn't disinformation. The power to decide what the truth is shouldn't be given to actual trained disinformation agents - aka the US security state.
