Male TV Presenters Wear Masks in Protest of New Taliban Restrictions on Female Presenters

Male TV Presenters Wear Masks in Protest of New Taliban Restrictions on Female Presenters

The Facts

  • In a protest dubbed #FreeHerFace on social media, male TV presenters in Afghanistan are wearing face masks on air in a show of solidarity after the Taliban ordered that all women on news channels must cover their faces.

  • Afghanistan's Taliban government began enforcing the order on Sunday.

  • The move was originally announced last week, but only a handful of news outlets complied prior to the Taliban's Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice's enforcement of the decree.

The Spin

Republican narrative

The current attacks on women's rights in Afghanistan are a direct result of the Biden administration's decision to withdraw from the country. His administration may pontificate about women's rights, but it has no way of enforcing them without troops on the ground.

Democratic narrative

While US involvement in Afghanistan saw significant gains for women's rights, the fact that Afghan security forces collapsed so quickly following its withdrawal indicates that the yields weren't sustainable without indefinite US presence, which itself wasn't sustainable or realistic.

Nerd narrative

There is a 25% chance that the US will recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Russian Diplomat Quits Over Ukraine War, Says He's Ashamed Of His Country

Russian Diplomat Quits Over Ukraine War, Says He's Ashamed Of His Country

The Facts

  • On Mon., diplomat Boris Bondarev resigned as a counselor at Russia's UN mission in Geneva in protest over the war in Ukraine and what he described as the degradation of the Russian political system.

  • In his resignation letter, sent to diplomats and published on social media, the 20-year veteran of Russia's Foreign Ministry said that since Russia had unleashed its "aggressive" war against Ukraine and the Western world, he'd never been "so ashamed" of his country.

  • Bondarev, who worked as a counselor on arms control, accused Russian leadership of being pompous and ruthless at the expense of both Russians and Ukrainians.

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

Boris Bondarev's arguments for resigning only prove that the West's assessment of Moscow's political elite is correct. Since Putin came to power, greed and warmongering have dominated Russia's political scene. It's the free world's moral obligation to do everything in its power to support decent people like Bondarev in breaking away from the Kremlin.

Pro-Russia narrative

Bondarev's resignation is just another welcome opportunity for the "free world" to demonize Russia and mask its own moral decay. It's telling, that, to this day, hardly any high-ranking Western politicians or officials have had the decency to resign over Iraq or numerous other wars that the West has unleashed in the name of "democracy and freedom."

Day 90: At Least 14 Dead in Luhansk, Donetsk; Ukraine Official Claims Putin Survived Assassination Attempt

Day 90: At Least 14 Dead in Luhansk, Donetsk; Ukraine Official Claims Putin Survived Assassination Attempt

The Facts

  • Ukraine has said Russian attacks in the eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk left at least 14 civilians dead and 15 others injured on Tuesday. Luhansk Gov. Serhiy Gaidai says the situation is getting "worse with every hour" as Russian shelling increases.

  • Meanwhile, Russia has surrounded the city of Severodonetsk in the Luhansk Oblast - where four civilians were reportedly killed on Tues. - on three fronts and is making marginal gains to encircle it, according to military analysts. Gov. Gaidai also reported that 25 Russian tactical groups were attempting to take the city and that shelling had severely increased, making it increasingly difficult for civilians to evacuate.

  • In his speech to the World Economic Forum at Davos on Mon., Ukrainian Pres. Zelenskyy called for "maximum" sanctions on Russia, later adding that Russian Pres. Putin was the only person he'd be prepared to meet with to discuss bringing the war to an end.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

After Putin failed to take Kyiv, he's now one month into his campaign to take the Donbas in the hope of salvaging a small victory in this unprovoked war of aggression. The West must not stop supporting Ukraine now, particularly with weaponry.

Establishment-critical narrative

A decisive victory over Russia is not a credible goal. Ukraine will have to negotiate a peace deal that reflects a realistic assessment on the ground, as well as the limits of how much the West is willing to drag itself into this conflict.

Nerd narrative

There is a 4% chance that NATO will declare a No-Fly Zone anywhere in Ukraine before 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

NYC Pays $7M to Exonerated Grant Williams

NYC Pays $7M to Exonerated Grant Williams

The Facts

  • New York City has agreed to pay Grant Williams $7M after he spent 23 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.

  • Williams was convicted for the fatal shooting of Shdell Lewis in 1997, but he always maintained his innocence and spent years appealing his guilty verdict.

  • According to the NYC comptroller office, Williams was convicted without a confession, murder weapon, or solid evidence. Police also reportedly ignored a witness who claimed that Williams wasn't the shooter.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

While appalling that Williams wrongly spent so many years behind bars, this case is an example of recent successful reforms to the justice system. Williams is free, has been generously compensated, and further reforms can be expected.

Establishment-critical narrative

A wrongful conviction is never the work of one bad apple, but rather a clear indication of latent system weaknesses. Compensating a victim and holding officials accountable won't undo the damage. More must be done to prevent this from happening again.

Trump Officials Transition from Politics to Profits in Middle East

Trump Officials Transition from Politics to Profits in Middle East

The Facts

  • A NYT report on Sun. has shed light on how senior Trump Admin. officials, such as WH advisor Jared Kushner and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, appear to have leveraged official contacts in the Middle East for profit after leaving office.

  • In the final months of the Trump admin., Kushner and Mnuchin reportedly spearheaded a new US government-sponsored investment vehicle called the Abraham Fund that was supposed to raise $3B for investments in the Middle East.

  • The Abraham Fund didn't have any designated accounts, staff, income, or projects, and the fund appears to have vanished when Trump left office.

The Spin

Left narrative

The revolving door effect is nothing new many bureaucrats accept the grind of an official role precisely for the opportunity to profit from it when they leave office. But this is something different Kushner and Mnuchin appear to have used their role as representatives of the US to advance their personal interests while still in office.

Right narrative

Kushner and Mnuchin's funds may be unseemly, but they don't violate any ethical rules because federal ethics guidelines - by design - don't apply to the White House nor to officials once they have left office. These issues are not limited to one party, nor are they as black and white as press coverage might suggest.

Cynical narrative

The constant flow of damning reports about the Trump admin. and its aftermath is making one thing clear the US has lost its ability to identify, punish, and deter corruption. When self-dealing is the very modus operandi of an entire admin., accountability becomes impossible. The rule of law is being degraded and it doesn't seem likely to improve.

Madison Cawthorn Under Investigation by House Ethics Panel

Madison Cawthorn Under Investigation by House Ethics Panel

The Facts

  • Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) is facing allegations of a conflict of interest in a cryptocurrency project he promoted along with separate allegation of an improper relationship with a congressional staff member.

  • The investigation comes after the political action group opposing Cawthorn, American Muckrakers, filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics. The complaint accuses Cawthorn of providing one of his House aides with free housing, travel, and loans.

  • The alleged conflict of interest involves Cawthorn's promotion of the meme cryptocoin LGB, which stands for "Let's Go Brandon." The next day the coin was promoted by NASCAR driver Brandon Brown, raising questions about whether Cawthorn had advanced non-public knowledge.

The Spin

Left narrative

Cawthorn's politics and behaviors have been reckless, reprehensible, and incendiary. While he has endured personal tragedies, this in no way excuses his unrepentant misbehavior and growing list of unacceptable actions. For now, his show is over and we all deserve refunds.

Right narrative

Politicians like Cawthorn are frequently labeled extremists for simply wanting to return to an America with conservative values. The real cause of the problems faced by Americans today are Democrats and Republicans In Name Only.

Starbucks is the Latest Company to Exit Russia

Starbucks is the Latest Company to Exit Russia

The Facts

  • On Mon., Starbucks announced that they would be ending operations in Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine.

  • Like other companies, Starbucks closed its 130 locations back in Mar. However, the closure has now become permanent.

  • Starbucks has nevertheless agreed to pay its roughly 2K Russian employees for up to six months, while also helping them transition into new job opportunities.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Starbucks is opting to do the noble thing by abandoning the Russian market. The company has determined that it's more important to uphold democratic values over profit.

Establishment-critical narrative

While the mass exodus of businesses from Russia may serve as an important condemnation of Putin, ultimately it's the average Russian people - many of whom do not support the war - that will suffer.

Airbnb to Close in China

Airbnb to Close in China

The Facts

  • Airbnb announced on Tues. that it will remove all 150K of its listings in China starting from Jul. 30, as the country's zero-COVID policy, lockdowns, and travel restrictions continue.

  • The ability to book for dates beyond Jul. 29 has been suspended, according to screenshots of the Airbnb notice shared across Chinese social media. Bookings from outside China after that date have also produced an error message.

  • Airbnb has operated in China since 2016 and has struggled to compete with the country's domestic platforms. The Chinese market has only made up around 1% of Airbnb's business in recent years, even though the PRC's market is the largest in the world.

The Spin

Anti-China narrative

This was a long-time coming. AirBnB has been a staunch and shameless supporter of the communist regime in Beijing, but even that wasn't enough to save it from the fierce competition of the Chinese market; the government's stifling of tourism through its zero-COVID policy was simply the final straw.

Pro-China narrative

China's zero-COVID is essential to keeping the population safe, and business will simply have to adapt to this reality. A recent study suggests that over 1.5M people could die in China if the country were to lift its zero-COVID policy. Large companies must understand that they have a duty to the people over profits.

Iraqi Citizen Arrested for Alleged Plot to Assassinate GW Bush

Iraqi Citizen Arrested for Alleged Plot to Assassinate GW Bush

The Facts

  • On Tues., an Iraqi national residing in Columbus, OH was arrested and faces federal charges in an alleged plot to assassinate former Pres. George W. Bush.

  • The accused man, 52-yr-old Shihab Ahmed Shihab Shihab, arrived in the US in Sept. 2020 on a visitor visa and filed for asylum in Mar. 2021. The asylum claim is pending review.

  • Shihab is alleged to have exchanged money with an undercover informant working for the FBI to bring ISIS-affiliated foreign individuals into the US and carry out the assassination. He also reportedly conducted surveillance of areas frequently visited by Bush.

The Spin

Right narrative

This news couldn't be any more grave or shocking - it's time to secure America's porous southern border immediately. The threat of terrorism grows every day. This is a #BidenBorderCrisis.

Left narrative

While concerning, Bush was never in any real danger. The fact that the plot was foiled simply highlights the FBI's vigilance in continuing to monitor ISIS threats, despite the group having been severely weakened by American operations in recent years. It also shows that even criminals "going dark" through encrypted data are not out of the reach of the Bureau.
