The Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) is a federal power marketing administration under the U.S. Department of Energy that markets and transmits wholesale electricity from hydroelectric facilities in 15 western states. WAPA operates over 17,000 miles of transmission lines and 300 substations, serving approximately 700 customers including cooperatives, municipalities, public utility districts, and federal and state agencies.
